As a coach, most people come to me because they’re struggling to lose weight. In the background, there’s so much else going on – stress at work, mom guilt, a resentful marriage, feeling like there’s no time to take care of themselves, headaches, low self-esteem, fatigue, chronic pain… the list goes on.
What they don’t understand when they come to me is that it’s all connected. Weight is a symptom. Pain is a symptom. Fatigue is a symptom. Anxiety is a symptom. Your body doesn’t speak in English, it speaks in symptoms.
Most often, the root cause is dysregulation in our nervous system. Interestingly enough, that’s something that doesn’t come up on diagnostic tests. Our nervous system is by far the most powerful piece of our body, but there’s no magic pill to treat it.
How do we decide what to eat, when to move, and how to digest our food? How do we feel pain, or feel energy? It’s all controlled through our nervous system. Even our hormones are affected by this bigger system.
Health is so much more than nutrition and exercise. There are times when it takes weeks or even months for me to give physical guidance on nutrition and exercise. First, you need to learn how to build a bridge between your mind and body and feel better emotionally. In this process, you learn to listen to your body and thoughts. You learn to live in a way that feels better on so many levels.
